The 5 Most Beautiful Villages in the Ardennes in and around Vresse-Sur-Semois
The Belgian Ardennes, a picturesque paradise full of lush forests, winding rivers and charming villages. Nestled in the heart of this hilly region, you will find villages that seem to come straight out of a fairy tale, each with its unique architecture, fascinating history and peaceful atmosphere.
Prepare to be enchanted by our selection of the 5 most beautiful villages in the Belgian Ardennes:
LaForêt
500 meters from our Apparthôtel Au Pied de Vigne is one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia: Laforêt. It is often described as one of the few places in the Ardennes where the typical character of the villages of that time has been preserved.
The village is located along the Semois and old facilities such as drinking troughs, wash houses and tobacco drying sheds are still visible. The authentic character will certainly charm you and make you immediately surrender a few hundred years back in time.
The Church of Sainte Agathe with its richly decorated ceiling, the Promenade des légendes and the adventurous Pont de Claies bridge are just some of the village’s attractions.
The natural beauty of Laforêt
Laforêt is surrounded by lush forests, steep valleys and sparkling rivers. The village itself is dotted with charming stone houses and traditional farms, offering a glimpse into Belgian rural life. Whether you’re an avid hiker, an enthusiastic cyclist or simply looking for a place to relax and admire the scenery, Laforêt has something for everyone.
Gros-Fays
Gros-Fays is a typical village in the Belgian Ardennes. Nestled on a hill overlooking the Semois, it offers breathtaking views of the green valley. The schist stone houses, built in the local architectural style, give the village a unique character.
Gros-Fays has a rich built heritage that bears witness to its history. The imposing 16th-century castle-farm is a striking feature. The church, the old brewery and the mill also add to the charm of the village. As you stroll through its narrow streets, you will also discover tobacco drying sheds, wash houses and watering troughs, vestiges of past rural activities.
Oûr
If you continue towards Saint Hubert, halfway between Paliseul and the book village of Redu, you will pass the third village that is one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia, namely Oûr.
Another charming, typically Ardennes village, this time not located in the Semois valley but on the Oûr. Behind the two bridges that lead you to the village, you will discover exceptional sandstone and slate houses built around the impressive Saint Laurent church.
Mirwart
Mirwart is the furthest village, about 41 km from Vresse-Sur Semois. Time seems to have had no effect on this picturesque town, with its castle surrounded by greenery. Old farms and farm buildings have preserved their centuries-old features: half-timbering, natural stone and old bricks still characterize the architectural heritage today. The main street leads to the imposing but modest castle, a protected monument that has dominated the region since the Middle Ages and has an incredible history. It has been damaged several times in times of war and revolution, but has always been rebuilt, improved and recently restored to its former glory. From its rocky spur, it overlooks the Lomme, a quiet and winding river. Below the village, you can see the fish ponds of the Domaine Provincial.
Sohier
When you come back to Vresse-Sur-Semois - be sure to visit Sohier (not far from Wellin, Tellin & Bure - where the Planckaerts were at home). Again one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia, but here you have more of a family character. The village consists of beautifully restored farms, all richly decorated with wild flowers. In addition to the beautiful farms, the village has the parish church of Sint-Lambertus, dating from 1870. In the village is a 17th century castle, privately owned, for sale through GrandJean Immobilier.
